Take the syllable spelled 의. Rivaling the absurdities of English's spelling conventions, this syllable has three pronunciations depending on... stuff:
- 의 is "ee" when at the end of a word and not a separate morpheme (as in 강의, kangeui [kang-ee] "lecture")
- 의 is "eh" when it's the possessive marker (as in 집의 옆, chibeui yeop [chibeh yeop] "the side of the house")
- 의 is (more or less) "uh-ee" when it's not at the end of a word (as in 의사, euisa [uh-eesa] "doctor")
